Hamilton Night, Thursday, November 29
One more reminder about "Hamilton Night". It's tomorrow -- Thursday, November 29 at 7:00pm in the JSIS cafeteria.
Both the new Hamilton principal, Katie Cryan, and assistant principal Jesley Alvarez will be at the meeting to answer all your questions. Katie is quite impressive, and I think she's doing great things for Hamilton.
If you're out of ideas for child care -- you're welcome to bring your kid to my house to watch movies with Joe. Let me know at n.dambrosia@comcast.net or at 545-7275/406-4068.

Notes from Ms. Nani -- Dictionaries and Biographies
Dictionaries: Each student should have their own personal dictionary to keep in their desk in Ms. Nani's classroom.
Biographies: Each students needs to know which two biography books they will be reading for the biography book reports. The two reports are due on November 30. Ask you child if they have the books. Book choices should be mixed -- women, men, U.S., international, different ethnic groups, etc.
It's ok to purchase a biography book for your child if they want something specific. Donations to the classroom library are graciously accepted if you don't need the book at home!

Media Day for Roots of Empathy -- Japanese 5th on TV November 15?
Tomorrow, Thursday November 15, is "Media Day" for Roots of Empathy, the program our 5th graders are pilot-testing for Seattle schools.
Various reporters (TV, newspaper, etc) will be observing the Japanese 5th grade class's Roots of Empathy session. But it's just the Japanese class who will be media stars. That's because of timing -- it needs to be in English, and the J class is with Ms. Nani all day tomorrow.
Watch the papers and TV news and listen to radio news to look for our JSIS students! Catherine Hinrichsen, the 5th grade Japanese class room rep requests that you let her know if you see their class in any media presentation. You can contact her at chinrichsen@seanet.com.

Chinese Ribbon Dance for 5th Grade Girls
Is your daughter interested in performing Ribbon Dance this year? Ms. Wei (our BOC teacher and Ribbon Dance coach) would like to get a preliminary count as to how many are interested.
Practices will be twice per week immediately after school. Bus transportation after practice is not provided, so each family must make their own arrangements to pick up their daughter. Those interested should contact Judy Shoji at jnshoji@hotmail.com.

Parent-Teacher Conferences Start Today (through Wed, 11/21)
Parent-teacher conferences start today – school ends at 1:10pm!
You should have received a reminder for your conference with your student’s teachers (it was attached to a letter from Sr. Hester dated 11/2/07). The teachers have specifically asked that you share any concerns about your student and his or her work. You might be interested in an article put out by the National PTA called “Making Parent-Teacher Conferences Work for Your Child”. Most of it is common sense but the guidelines are useful to see again and the prep and follow-up suggestions are helpful. http://www.pta.org/archive_article_details_1118085766734.html

Carkeek Park Field Trip -- Meet Them There
Both 5th grade classes are going on a Land, Water and Salmon Science Unit field trip to Carkeek Park on Monday (November 5). Parents are invited to meet the class at the lower meadow at 10am. The can use at least four volunteers (but the bus is packed with kids, so parents need to meet the class at the meadow).
Busses will leave school at 9:30am and return to school at 12:30pm. The class will eat lunch after they return. 12:30 is later than the normal lunch period, so bring a lunch that day, or be sure to let Ms. Nani know that your child will be buying a sack lunch from school (yes, that is available).
Be sure to dress warmly for this trip!
