Math Olympiad

This just in from our math specialist -- Margreet DeLeew. Margreet organizes this every year and I hear it's great fun!

Dear 5th Grade Parents/Guardians,

Announcing the 2008 middle school MATH OLYMPIAD
An annual event organized through the Washington State Mathematics Council

Date: Saturday, May 3, 2008
Location: Many sites across the state including the John Stanford International School
Time: 8:30 to 2:00

The MATH OLYMPIAD is an opportunity for teams of students in grades 5-8 to come flex their math muscles. The contest has two sessions: session 1 – a one hour significant problem, and session 2 – five twenty minute quizzes in each of the content areas: number sense, measurement, geometry, probability and statistics, and algebraic reasoning. Teams compete against themselves for ribbons and medals – what matters is how many points the team accumulates, not how the team compares with other teams at the site.

This will be my 4th year of participating in this event, my 3rd year as a site coordinator at the John Stanford International School.
For more information on the Math Olympiad go on-line to www.sound-decisions.org/olympiad.

If you think you and your student might be interested in participating in this event please look for the registration form coming home in your child's backpack (the registration fee is $10 per student) and return it to Ms Nani. Also please let me know by e-mail: amdeleeuw@seattleschools.org.

As soon as I know how many students are interested, I will make up teams and start practicing more intensely hopefully once a week before school. This year I will enter also one 4th grade team to participate in the 5th grade Olympiad!

Margreet de Leeuw, K-5 Math specialist
