Even though we didn’t collect $$ for it, our kids have still left their “legacy” mark on the school.
Be sure to check out the new rock garden and flowering cherry tree at the northwest corner of the school property. Doug Hansen (Seiji’s dad, J) has been working with the 5th graders on the garden. This year’s fourth graders will be taking over next year to make even more improvements.
Also, the Spanish Class made ceramic tiles that now decorate the north side of the raised stage area on the kindergarten playground.
Be sure to check these out when you’re at school tomorrow for graduation.

Yearbook Thank You
A note from Jaqui, Will's mom --
I wish to send along my hearty thanks to all involved with this years YEAR BOOK committee. It is elegant, clean and prizes our students on an individual level and of course Barry’s photos are phenomenal. The layout does a beautiful job balancing the student’s words with their photos creating a fine balance.
It is VERY hard work putting together a year book and so I wish to thank all who were involved!
Happy summer to all – Jacqueline James Golding.
Thanks Jaqui! We had a great time working on it too!
The Yearbook Committee: Amy Chinn, Barry Wong, Peter Kaczkowski, Sal Celis and Isabel D'Ambrosia

Priscilla and Nani Need Pizza Volunteer
Priscilla and Nani are hosting the annual pizza party for our (mostly 5th grade) playground mediators this coming Monday, 6/16. They need help getting the pizzas from Pudge Brothers to Wallingford Park.
Email Priscilla or Nani if you would be able to pick up nine pizzas (paid for) at Pudge Bros (263 N.E. 45th ) at 11:45am on Monday. They would love it it you would also be able to stay for a little while to help facilitate serving the pizza (but that part's not as important as the delivery, of course).

Hamilton E-Bulletin
If you're headed to Hamilton, now is a great time to get connected!
Hamilton International Middle School PTSA would like to offer an opportunity for incoming Hamilton families to sign up for the Hamilton E-bulletin. The E-bulletin is sent out once a week and a couple extra times a year for special announcements.
You can sign-up directly at http://groups.google.com/group/hims-ebulletin-class-of-11/subscribe, or email Ethan Bradford at Ethan_Bradford@stanfordalumni.org.
While this is intended primarily for Hamilton families, it's also a great way to keep track of what’s going on in the neighborhood.

Picnic/Potluck at Gas Works Park, June 17
Please come to the 5th grade post-graduation party!
All families and friends are invited to a potluck barbecue at Gasworks Park following the JSIS graduation. We'll be at shelter #2 from 2:30 until 10 p.m. It is a covered area so that is where we'll meet, rain or shine!
We will provide barbecue items, paper plates, cups, utensils, napkins, and all beverages. We do need 2 or 3 more Weber barbecues since the park only has one small one for us. And we could also use a folding table or two. Please call Debby Heath (632-9150) or e-mail her at debby.heath@lakesideschool.org if you can bring a Weber or a table.
For the potluck supper if your last name begins with:
A-D- bring a side dish or an appetizer
E-K- bring a dessert
L-Z- bring hot dogs, burgers (or veggie dogs/burgers) and buns
Also, feel free to bring frisbees, soccer balls, baseball bats and balls, etc. We look forward to a great turnout from both the Spanish and Japanese classes!!
Questions? Want to help? Please contact Debby Heath, Mia Loseff's mom (J).

Teacher Gifts -- Contribute Through Mon., June 9
Ok Brent, Nani and Priscilla, close your eyes because this is a surprise....
The end of the year is approaching fast, so it’s time to think about end-of-the-year gifts for our hard-working teachers! The word from Brent, Nani and Priscilla is that they really like getting a single gift card instead of 50 mugs, etc. And we can use part of the gift funds to provide a 5th grade yearbook to each teacher.
If you would like to contribute to a class gift, send your contribution to school in an envelope with my name on it. Cash is fine, but checks can be made out to JSIS PTSA (the gift cards are sold by the JSIS PTSA). The PTSA gift card committee has a long list of gift cards the teachers can choose from.
I’ll collect gift contributions until Monday, June 9. And I’ll be at the 5th grade play performance this Friday evening (June 6, 7:00pm), so you can drop off your contribution in person if you like.

Bake Sale Makes Good Dough!
This just in from Judy Shoji, our fabulous bake sale chair --
The 5th Grade Bake Sale was a great Success!
Thank you to everyone who contributed to make our bake sale a huge success. We earned $376.50! The funds will be used for 5th grade graduation expenses.
Special thanks to Melia's mom (Katherine) and Nick's mom (Kelly) for shopping at Costco then donating those items to us. Thanks to Kieran's mom (Barbara) for getting us a donation of five dozen donuts and providing us with thirst-quenching ice tea and lemonade to sell. Katherine, Kelly & Barbara also helped the day of the sale by supervising the kids. I could not have done it without the three of you!
Also, thanks to all the families who dropped off such mouth-watering goodies. We had two tables full of wonderful things! Finally, thanks to all the 5th graders who were terriffic sales people. They did a extraordinary job!
Thanks everyone!

Scoliosis Screening - What to Wear
This note came home from Nurse Marie --
On Wednesday, May 21 the school nurse will screen 5th grade students to scoliosis. Both boys and girls must be screened with their shirts off. Girls should wear a bathing suit or sports bra to school on the screening date. Screening for scoliosis will be done privately. If scoliosis is suspected, the student will be re-screened at a later date. You will be notified of any positive results so that you can take your student for a further medical evaluation.
If you do not want you child screened please let us know. Questions? Please call Marie DeBell, School Nurse (206) 252-0687 or mdebell@seattleschools.org

Field Trip Tomorrow 5/16
The 5th grade is going to the Seattle International Children's Festival at the Seattle Center tomorrow Friday, 5/16. The word from Joe D. is that each student is allowed to bring $5.00 to spend -- but anything in excess of $5.00 will be confiscated. Sounds fair.
Fifth Grade Gift? And Teacher Gifts
Fifth grade classes in the past have typically chosen some kind of gift to present to the school upon their graduation. Gifts in the past have included trees, a concrete bench on the playground, etc -- usually something lasting.
Does anyone have an idea for what we could get? Would anyone like to work on collecting $$, purchasing, and presenting the gift?
We'll also need to think about end-of-year teacher gifts. I am willing to collect cash from anyone who would like to donate. I can purchase gift cards for each teacher. The JSIS PTSA has a nice selection and each teacher can make a choice of which card they would like.

Instrumental Music Concert and Rehersal Details
If your child is in instrumental music -- remember that there's concert next Wednesday night 5/21, at Brighton Elementary. Brighton is located at 6725 45th Ave. S.
Mr. Holmes has requested that the kids arrive at 6:15pm. There will be 96 students performing that evening, so he needs adequate time to get everyone tuned up. The concert will start at 7:15.
Also please remember the rehearsal for the concert is next Wednesday morning 5/21, and kids need to arrive early for school that day -- I hear 8:55am -- and bring their instrument to school, so they can take the bus to the rehearsal at Brighton.

REVISED RETURN TIME FROM CAMP
The kids will be getting back from OPI at around 2:30pm on Wednesday, so they will be going home AT THE REGULAR SCHOOL DISMISSAL TIME (3:20pm).
Other, earlier correspondence had said they'd get back at 7 p.m. Not any more. So please plan to pick up your child at 3:20, or have him/her take regular transportation home, or go to LSA, etc that day.
Ms. Nani says to expect them to be pretty tired, so it might be a good idea not to plan anything for that afternoon. A packing list is being sent home today, along with other information and an information packet for the chaperone parents.

Staff Appreciation -- We're Covered
Staff Appreciation Week is next week (even though unfortunately, our 5th grade teachers will be at camp Mon-Wed). But don't worry -- 5th grade is all set for donations! An anonymous 5th grade family has donated the services of an espresso cart on Monday. THANK YOU anonymous donor!
They do plan to have the espresso cart there early on Monday so the 5th grade teachers can grab a latte before heading to camp.

Bake Sale at the Rummage Sale
The bake sale is gearing up! The 5th grade class is going to run a "concession" at the May 17th JSIS Rummage Sale. We would like to sell from 9am to 1pm. Money we earn from food sales will go toward our graduation festivities. (The JSIS PTSA does not provide substantial funds for graduation, so this is the primary source of cash to support any fun we want to plan.)
Three ways you can help:
1. Bake your favorite cookies, muffins, cake, etc… for us to sell,
2. Contact a local vendor, family or friend who will donate sweets to us, or
3. Have your child sign up to help during the sale.
Contact Judy Shoji (jnshoji@hotmail.com) and let her know how you will help.

Please Send Photos for the 5th Grade Memory Book by May 9
Perhaps you know that we're putting together a Memory Book so you and your kids can remember the JSIS years. This tradition has been in place for several years.
This year we are planning on a page for each child including their informal portrait (thank you Barry W.!), a writing sample that your kids have already been working on in English and in their second language, and a candid photo. This letter is a request for one candid photograph for your child's page.
The photo will be formated to fit in no more than a 3x5 inch space, and printed in Black and White. Color originals are fine, either digital or hardcopy prints. We'll scan them and convert them if needed.
The book will also contain photos and letters from the staff, and a number of miscellaneous color photographs from our 6 years at JSIS. You are welcome to contribute to the pool of general pictures. We'll try to fit as many in as we can.
- Photos are welcome from now until May 9th. (We do plan to include some from camp.)
- Email digital pictures to Michael's dad: Peter Kaczkowski <pkaczkowski@comcast.net>
- Please place print originals in an envelope with your kid's name on it, and deliver to the collection box in Ms. Nani's room; prints will be returned to you as soon as they are scanned.
Thanks everyone!

WASL Testing -- Bring Snacks
The 5th grade WASL starts Monday, April 21 and wraps up the following Wednesday, April 30. (Make-up days in case of illness are May 1 and 2.)
Nani and Brent are requesting that families bring in snacks. The WASL is very liberal about eating during the test. It's encouraged. Crackers and dry snacks are great. Fruit is wonderful, but be sure to cut it up into student-sized portions before you bring it in. Nani says no candy please.

Testing for 6th Grade Honors Math at Hamilton
Even though Eckstein is holding a spring-of-5th-grade placement test for 6th grade Honors Math, it doesn't look like Hamilton will. I emailed Katie Cryan, the Hamilton principal to ask about it. She reports that the middle school principals have been discussing doing a district-wide spring-of-5th grade test, but Hamilton does not plan to do one this year. She promises to keep us posted if there are any developments.
Also -- if you're heading to Whitman, Washington, etc, consider calling these schools to find out if they're requiring a spring-of-5th grade test to gain entrance into 6th grade Honors Math.

6th Grade Honors Math Testing at Eckstein
I saw this notice in another elementary school's family newsletter about Honors math testing for Eckstein M.S. I imagine that if your child is signed up for Eckstein, they will notify you by mail. But here's the notice:
Students will be placed in Math 6 or Math 6 Honors based on results of the Eckstein Honors Placement Exam. Students in 6th grade Honors Math will follow the 7th grade curriculum. The purpose of this exam is to provide initial evidence of how many students are ready for the advanced course and allow us to prepare our schedule with the appropriate number of classes. The exam will cover the essential learnings for grade 6 math. Though we will gather other information from grade 5 teachers and district assessments later this school year and summer for final placements, a student MUST HAVE TAKEN our exam to be considered for the opportunity. All of our incoming 6th graders are welcome and encouraged to participate. No reservations are needed. Meet in the Eckstein cafeteria.
Tesing Dates:
Saturday, April 26 from 10am until 11:30am
Tuesday, April 29 from 4:00pm to 5:30pm.
You also might consider calling Eckstein for more information.

March Madness
From the Principal
John Stanford International School
March 28, 2008
“Springing Past March Madness”
Dear JSIS Fifth Grade Families,
In a typical school’s calendar, there are distinct and predictable seasons and patterns. I’m not talking about weather either; I’m talking about “seasons of behavior”. For example, in the weeks leading up to Halloween, the goblin and ghost behaviors tend to increase as does the need for kids to take after-lunch naps. In January, after winter break, when the days are shorter and air is colder, kids are pretty mellow and settled into school. Learning in January is at a premium. In March, however, just as the temperature warms and flowers begin to bloom, schools tend to also see a “blooming” of student energy and excitement and not always the best kind. People think March Madness has to do with basketball. In fact, some have come to believe that the term actually originated from some elementary school principal describing the time between mid-winter break and spring break when student behavior is at its strangest. I’m not sure what it is that causes the increase in boundary-testing and the exhibiting of behaviors that veer from what is socially acceptable, but it happens. Every year.
One of the March incidents happened just a week ago. As some of you may have heard, on Wednesday, March 19th, a student sprayed some whiteboard cleaner into a substitute’s water bottle. This was a severe infraction that we are taking very seriously. However, please be assured that it is an isolated incident and is not indicative of typical behavior among our fifth graders. Once I was able to share what happened with the two classes, students who had heard about the incident came forward and reported the student.
In addition to this issue, a few other incidents involving student behavior have occurred during this past month. For reasons of confidentiality, I don’t share discipline/consequence details regarding a student with anyone outside his/her family. And I always appreciate it when parents encourage their kids to be okay with not knowing every detail and not spreading rumors about kids who have made suspendable mistakes. This helps make the reentry of a student and the healing that needs to happen on all ends much easier. However, I do understand the importance of communicating to all families that situations are resolved in accordance with district guidelines and policies and that their students are safe. In all of the incidents that occurred this past month, I’ve consulted with the district to assess the safety of students and to assign appropriate consequences for actions. If or when a student comes back from serving a consequence such as a suspension, the staff and I create a safety plan as well as help students rebuild relationships.
As we spring past the madness of March (I’m looking out my window right now and it’s snowing – case in point that March is a strange month indeed), we have so much to look forward to. After we come back from break, our kids are going to be working on class projects to show what they think compassion looks like in the world around them. They’re going to be hearing the Dalai Lama speak at Key Arena about compassion and empathy. They’re going to be taking the WASL which is their opportunity to show all that they’ve learned while at JSIS. And all classes from Kindergarten through 5th grade are going to be starting Second Step and Steps to Respect lessons to help create the compassionate and respectful climate that we all want at JSIS. And finally, our fifth graders are going to be getting ready for an exciting camp on the Olympic Peninsula.
I hope you all have a wonderful spring break. If you have any questions or comments about March Madness at JSIS, please let me know. Otherwise, have a great vacation and join me in cheering on the coming of April.
Sincerely,
Mr. Aramaki

Dear 5th Grade Parents/Guardians,
Announcing the 2008 middle school MATH OLYMPIAD
An annual event organized through the Washington State Mathematics Council
Date: Saturday, May 3, 2008
Location: Many sites across the state including the John Stanford International School
Time: 8:30 to 2:00
The MATH OLYMPIAD is an opportunity for teams of students in grades 5-8 to come flex their math muscles. The contest has two sessions: session 1 – a one hour significant problem, and session 2 – five twenty minute quizzes in each of the content areas: number sense, measurement, geometry, probability and statistics, and algebraic reasoning. Teams compete against themselves for ribbons and medals – what matters is how many points the team accumulates, not how the team compares with other teams at the site.
This will be my 4th year of participating in this event, my 3rd year as a site coordinator at the John Stanford International School.
For more information on the Math Olympiad go on-line to www.sound-decisions.org/olympiad.
If you think you and your student might be interested in participating in this event please look for the registration form coming home in your child's backpack (the registration fee is $10 per student) and return it to Ms Nani. Also please let me know by e-mail: amdeleeuw@seattleschools.org.
As soon as I know how many students are interested, I will make up teams and start practicing more intensely hopefully once a week before school. This year I will enter also one 4th grade team to participate in the 5th grade Olympiad!

Architects for Extra Credit
Does your family know an architect? Your child can get extra credit for the Architecture project if you know an architect who would be willing to come speak to the Spanish 5th grade class about his or her work.
Architects are welcome to speak to the 5th grade class any afternoon after mid-winter break and before March 15 (double check dates and times with Nani). Their presentation should be no more than 1/2 hour including time for questions. It would be great if they could bring building models they have created.

Share Thoughts About Middle School Choice?
Has anyone gained any good information or insights into middle school programs lately? Has a particular tour inspired you or turned you off? Have you made a firm decision? What made you come to a conclusion about where to send you child to middle school?
It would be great if you could share your thoughts. Just click on the "comments" button below on this post. (I think you need to sign in to blogger, but that just takes a second.) It would be great to hear what people are thinking about as we all decide where to send our kids to school next year!

Summer Spanish Immersion in Salamanca, Spain
Brent Hester received this information about a summer program for 10-14 year olds in Salamanca, Spain. Brent studied for a while in Salamanca himself and he says that the programs there are wonderful. It's a relatively pricey summer camp -- but a great one!
Click here to see the program website: http://www.tiatula.com/
Brent also sent a flyer to me, but I can't get it to post here. I'll attach it to the class email.

Spectrum Admission and M.S. Registration
If you're looking at the middle school registration forms we received, you'll notice that there are boxes to check if you're registering for Spectrum or APP. But -- the district hasn't yet mailed test results to families that would indicate if your child qualifies for Spectrum or APP!
The word I get from people who have experience with these things is: If your child took the Spectrum entrance test and you think your child may qualify for Spectrum, you should just wait a week or two for the test results to arrive (they arrive by mail, not through school). The on-time enrollment period goes through February 29, so there is time to wait a while. Then you'll know for sure whether your child qualifies for Spectrum and you can register for Spectrum classes on the enrollment form. (If you didn't wait, or if you don't want to wait, I hear that you can "amend" your enrollment application if needed, but I'm not exactly sure how that's done.)
Remember -- on-time enrollment means that your Middle School Application form has been received by the district enrollment office by February 29.

Graduation Committee -- We Need You
Now that we're registering for middle school, it time to think about the graduation party!!!
Colleen K. (Grace's mom) has volunteered to work on the food/refreshments part of the graduation on June 17. Peggy R. (Maya's mom from J-5) also mentioned working up a slide show. But there's still lots of work to do for decorations, class gift, and possibly teacher thank-yous (maybe all of our JSIS teachers, not just 5th grade?)
Please contact Colleen at ckennelly@seanet.com or 634-1867 or Peggy at peggy.rice@kingcounty.gov or 675-8544 if you are interested in working on this great event!

Hamilton Immersion Tour Tomorrow, 1/22, 8:30am
It's the Immersion Tour at Hamilton -- tomorrow morning at 8:30 until 10:00am! 5th graders are encouraged to attend, and their absence from school is excused. Just call in to let JSIS know your child will be on the tour. (Absenses are excused for all middle school tours -- not just Hamilton.)
Hamilton is located at 1610 N. 41 St., about a mile west of JSIS.

Middle School Enrollment -- It's Time!
Joe D. received his official middle school enrollment forms in the mail last week. Look for yours too -- they should arrive by January 31, or you need to contact the enrollment center.
Enrollment forms must be submitted by February 29, 2008. Don't be late, or you probably won't like the results.
Enrollment forms can be sent in by mail (you can ask for confirmation of receipt by enclosing a self-addressed, stamped envelope with your form), or I believe you can go down to the enrollment center to turn it in in person. The North enrollment center is located at 1330 N. 90th St., which is just east of Aurora Ave. N. at 90th.

Notes from 5th Grade Parent Meeting
Thanks for coming to Nani's 5th grade parent meeting last Wednesday. There was a great turnout! Here are some quick notes.
Camp in May:
The entire 5th grade will be going to camp on May 5, 6 and 7, 2008. Parents/guardians are invited to come along as cabin leaders or program assistants. Grant money has been obtained to pay the student fees, but parents must pay to attend camp. (Nani doesn't know the amount yet, check back with her soon.)
F.L.A.S.H. Curriculum (Family Life and Sexual Health):
Curriculum will be taught to 5th grade students during the month of March. If there is a lesson you would not like your child to participate in, let Nani know.
Memory Books:
5th grade families traditionally produce a "memory book" for 5th graders. Contact Isabel D'Ambrosia or Peter Kaczkowski if you would like to participate.
5th Grade Musical:
Heather Kenney, Marisol Berrios Dudley and Sharon Rodgers (among others) are in charge so far. They're deciding what they play/performance will be like very soon, so contact them if you are feeling theatrical.
Landscaping:
5th grade is steward of the native plant garden at the northwest corner of the school property. Doug Hansen is working on a brochure to describe the plants. We need you on this committee if you love gardening!
WASL Testing Dates:
April 21-30, 2008. Parents are asked to organize and bring snacks for the class during the testing period. WASL testing is from one to three hours every day during those weeks. 5th graders take math, science and reading WASL tests.
Graduation:
Assembly and 5th grade family party takes place on the last day of school, June 17, 2008. The 5th grade party is from about 12:30 to 2:30pm. 5th grade has traditionally run a bake/food sale at the JSIS Rummage Sale (in mid- May) to raise money for the graduation party.

Article About Roots of Empathy
There's an article about our 5th Graders' participation in the "Roots of Empathy" class in this month's Parent Map magazine.
In the article, Brent Hester reports that "...all of their (the boys) worries about how they look, about being cool, cracking each other up -- all of that just melts away". Wow -- great class! Click here to read more:

Homework News from Ms. Nani
All biography reading assignments are due on January 31. That will be the end of the biography unit.
The next unit will be persuasive writing. So start thinking about your "letters to the editor".
Also, Ms. Nani reports that about 10 students from our class (not sure which ones yet) will be attending a Martin Luther King Day event on Friday 1/18.

Middle School Interest Group Meeting Wed, January 16
Ed's Note: Too bad this is the same day as Nani's parent meeting, even though this one will most likely start later. But maybe it's worth an entire evening of meetings!
Community & Parents for Public Schools (CPPS Seattle) is holding a meeting on Wednesday, January 16 to talk about middle school. The group will address the concerns parents have about Seattle middle schools (truth, rumor, and perception), and the need for quality secondary education that begins in middle school. There will also be a focus discussion about how “advanced learning” works in middle school. What should advanced learning comprise? Who should have access to it?
In addition to the January 16 meeting, CPPS is hoping to launch an outreach to parents for an ongoing discussion about middle school in Seattle -- possibly an online forum or a series of meetings.
Please feel free to pass the word among 5th grade and middle school parents.
For more information about the meeting time and location, contact:
